ARQUITECTURA, DÓNDE Y CUÁNDO | ARCHITECTURE, WHERE AND WHEN

Vol. 2. Del Siglo XV a nuestros días
Francis D. K. Ching, Vikramaditya Prakash, Mark M. Jarzombek
Gustavo Gili, 2011

| The history of architecture, ancient or modern, is probably the most repeated motif in the architectural libraries. It is worth pausing to note how Ching, Jarzombek and Prakash addressed the issue in A Global History of Architecture.

The title of the publication reveals the main features of the approach. It recognizes, in the first place, the uniqueness of the proposal, "a" history of architecture, assuming the multitude of existing and potential interpretations. The subtitle specific what does it mean with this approach: it is an observation that traces chronologically the contributions to the discipline of different cultures.

The Spanish edition of the book has divided into two volumes the original title, A Global History of Architecture, published in 2007 by John Wiley & Sons. The second volume, to which we dedicate these lines, tackles projects built worldwide since 1400. A double feature distinguishes the selection of works: the representation of a time and their location in a culture. For this reason the exhibition is a chronological uncritical look that flees from oriented thematic or geographic affinities.

The book offers a structure that allows convenient and flexible reading of the text. The chapters are arranged by centuries, presented by an introductory critical text. Next, it is presented a chronological map that locates the selected works, and that –in turn– are accompanied by an extensive graphical information . The selection meet the intent of its authors, generating a multitude of cross-cultural readings.

Professor Francis D. K. Ching is probably well known for his dedication to the discipline of architectural drawing. Architectural Graphics, Visual Dictionary of Architecture or Drawing and Design are some of his most celebrated texts in this area. This possible relationship between architectural design and a historical selection of projects could recall the famous book by Rafael Moneo and Juan Antonio Cortes Comments on 20 Contemporary Architects Drawings (1976). Like Ching, Moneo and Cortes, then professors at the School of Architecture of Barcelona, took the opportunity to comment on a series of architectural drawings to map out the history of architecture, in their case, what was developed in recent years.

A Global History of Architecture is, in short, an accessible text, less polluted than the general dominant eurocentric historiography.
