Otra casa es posible: cuestionando el diseño residencial desde el género | Another house is possible: questioning residential design from gender

Redesigning the American Dream: The Future of Housing, Work, and Family Life
Dolores Hayden
W.W. Norton, 2002

| The publication of the book Redesigning the American dream by Dolores Hayden in 1984 meant a provocative call for attention to gender issues in residential architecture. Single-family homes in the suburbs were spreading like an oil slick throughout the American territory since the end of World War II.

The Power of Place: Urban Landscapes as Public History (1995).

All this despite the fact that the society that had to inhabit them had changed dramatically: now not only the husband worked outside the home, single parent households had increased and also the number of people living alone. Dolores Hayden raised her voice for cities that favor gender equality, for neighborhoods and home interiors to not penalize women as responsible for many of the tasks associated with home and family care.

Eighteen years later, when the book is a classic and gender has emerged in architecture, the author updates the book with data and examples of recent years that help to contextualize the validity of her speech. The historical journey through the evolution of the American home is maintained in this new edition, which adds data when addresses current social issues such as family structures that inhabit domestic interiors that had been designed for the wife "angel of the hearth" or when describes the public spaces where women's presence is in the process of standardization.

Hayden's interest in gender had already given in 1981 a volume entitled The Grand Domestic Revolution: A History of Feminist Designs for American Homes, Neighborhoods, and Cities, but was the redesign of the American dream who promoted the study of the relationship between the built environment and gender. She has also published two very influential titles on American Suburb: A Field Guide to Sprawl (2004) and Building Suburbia: Green Fields and Urban Growth, 1820-2000, a history of seven American landscapes (2003). Both have been selected by the web Planetizen among the top ten books of urban studies. Her work in the group The Power of Place, founded in Los Angeles in 1984 to recover the memory multicultural inner city, resulted in the volume The Power of Place: Urban Landscapes as Public History (1995). The two decades that separate editions of this book have also revealed Dolores Hayden as a poet of American landscapes. One of her last poems is Nymph, Dum and Spinner (2010).

The reissue of the Redisigning the American dream confirms that the plurality of points of view (from gender, multiculturalism, etc..) enriches the processes to rethink our homes, neighborhoods and cities.
